Ghost in dreams is a spector of the past

Q: Dear Barbara. I had a dream the other day that I would like to have interpreted.   I was in an old stone building, that was a store in the front and a tourist area in the back. I went into the back and had a sense of fear - I could sense that  there was a ghost in the corner. I ran back to the front store area and floated to the ceiling... where I felt safe.  (I frequently levitate in my dreams). Then I picked up a watering can that was for sale, and tipped it over. Even though it was empty, and I could SEE that it was empty, water kept pouring out.  Can you help?

Jeanette in Ocean Township

A: Dreams often reflect our fears about waking issues.During the day we unconsciously deny our fears, but when we sleep our defenses are down, and we come face to face  with them..The stone building represents a solid territorial structure. A store, representing a new beginning, perhaps a business venture. The tourist area is  a coming and going of  of  monetary and personal security. Not sticking around for the the long run. A quick hello and goodbye. Nothing permanent. You have a deep seeded fear of  a lack of security in your life. Stemming from childhood . You sensed the ghost, didn't actually see it. Good thing, Ghosts can represent death, but in this instance it represents your past, something you don't want a repeat performance in your adult years.Levitation is a great way to review your fears from a distance, much safer viewing than in the mix of inner conflict. The watering can is a symbol of  your physical body. the water is spiritual nourishment ,and fulfillment. Even though you feel empty the water keeps pouring out. Your sense of thirst is never-ending, and your spiritual enlighttment needs to be fulfilled. Get in touch with your fears in your waking hours, you have so much healing to do from your childhood.  This dream is saying keep the Ghost of the past where it belongs,in the past.

Q: I awoke at 5:30 to a woman's voice saying my name, "Barba ra."      I was awake and tried to listen so I could identify who was calling my name.    After falling asleep again, I had a dream that my ex-husband invited me to his home. When I arrived at my ex's house, I saw a young boy and girl necking. I happened to surprise them. I saw my ex come out of another room in blue silk pajamas. He didn't appear to see me. A woman followed him out of the room. She had black hair and seemed to be pleasant. They all spoke to me as a friend and I thought that my ex also spoke to me as though we were never married. Barbara R., Brick

A: This dream signifies sex, romance, intimacy and emotional conflict over an unresolved relationship. I believe you were still sleeping when you heard a women's voice calling your name. That was your subconscious telling you to wake up to a situation that is out of your control. There were five people in your dream. The number five is associated with marriage. Your ex invited you to his home. This represents the past and a longing for it. The adolescent children represent your childhood … an innocent time. You say the young couple were "necking." This term is an old-fashioned expression for the exploration of sexuality … your sexuality. Times were so uncomplicated then. The couple was surprised … an emotion felt when young and inexperienced. Your ex appears from another room … a bedroom … in blue silk pajamas. Blue symbolizes depression … feeling blue … and the silk is sexuality. Pajamas are bedroom attire. When you piece all the elements together, it reveals that your ex is having a sexual relationship with the black-haired lady. He talked to you as though you were never married … never intimate. You are hurt and carrying a torch for this man. You must deal with your feelings of rejection. Although you might have been the one to call it quits, this dream certainly tells a story of unrequited love and abandonment. You long for the days when love was dear and uncomplicated. But your emotions are stuck in the present.

Q: Dear Barbara.  I have two dream questions, actually one is a lack of a dream, that I’m curious about.   My wife passed away almost two years ago and a day doesn’t go by that I think of her.  However, I have not had one dream of her the entire time that she has been gone.  We were only married for 8 years, and come to think of it I never dreamed about her until we were married for about 3 years.  Do you have any ideas? The other is a reoccurring dream of me going to play golf.  I’m an avid golfer but in my dreams of golf, I have yet to hit the ball.  Every time I try to tee the ball up there is something in the way, like a tree or building.  The obstacles will interfere with either the flight of the ball or my swing.

Thanks, Bob

A: Golf is a game played with yourself, there is no other opponent other than you. You[re an avid golf player, but in your dream you fail to make the shot. You are in conflict with yourself, in your everyday life.  Could it be in your waking hours your not attaining your goals by the interference of circumstances and people which you perceive are beyond your control Clearly you feel like a victim. This anxiety driven dream are the feelings you repress on a conscious level. What's in your way, preventing you from going forward? It's you who are blocking the shot. Flight is a term for freedom and the feeling of overcoming the impossible. You're stuck in an emotional trap. The tree, the building is interfering with you moving into a new phase of your life. You create  these obstacles in your dream.. When you come to terms with the difficulties you need to address and surmount you will not dream this again.
